Spunbond and SMS Nonwoven Line Equipment for Hygiene Manufacturers

Spunbond is the workhorse for topsheet and backsheet coverstock. Producers want it soft, they want it light, and they want the weight to stay put across the full working width. In practice that means the extrusion, drawing and web-laying sections have to be matched carefully; a beam that lays down 15 gsm beautifully at one speed can start streaking when you push output. We size the line around the weight range the customer actually sells, not a brochure maximum.

Buyers usually ask two questions early. Can the line hold uniformity at the low end of the weight range, and how fast can it change over between products. Both come down to how the equipment is specified and controlled, so we go into that detail during line design rather than after the fact.

An SMS nonwoven line is a spunbond line with a meltblown station in the middle, and that middle station is where the engineering earns its keep. Meltblown fibres are fine and the process is sensitive to air temperature and die condition, so the whole line has to be stable and the layers have to bond cleanly without hard spots. Get that right and you have a barrier fabric suited to the leg-cuff and standing-gather areas of diapers and to fluid-resistant medical-adjacent hygiene products.

We build the SMS configuration as an integrated line rather than bolting a meltblown unit onto an existing spunbond machine after the fact. It costs a little more discipline up front in the layout stage, but it avoids the alignment and bonding headaches that show up later on a patched-together setup.

A spunbond or SMS plant is a large, connected system, and the risk on these projects is usually at the seams between suppliers.
